Visual inspections of storage systems should be done on a routine basis. Visual inspections should include the following.
Anchors: Look for loose or sheared anchors. "Anchors are required to resist many forces at the base of the columns and to maintain position of the rack column." RMI - Rack Manufactures Institute
Plumb of Racks: "The maximum out-of-plumb ratio for a loaded rack column is 1/2" per 10' of height... This ratio could be used for straightness also." RMI

Beam Deflection: The beams should not be smiling at you. If they are smiling then weight needs to be taken off of the beam level.
Beam Damage: Damaged beams should be replaced.
Rack Damage: Visual rack damage whether it be column or braces should be addressed. If visual damage is present, the effected area should be unloaded and repair or replacement should ensue.
